A Brief Academic History and Technology Usage

A Brief Academic History and Technology Usage

In 2011, I completed by Registered nurse training at the New Amsterdam School of Nursing. The early stages of my career I have been privileged to work at different hospital around Guyana, including private and public.

The last 4 years I have been working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a trained NICU nurse. I have about 3 years leadership experience as the Nurse manager of the NICU at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Guyana. During those years I strongly believe that my leadership skills have improved and is still improving even to this day. I've learnt to work with people of different ages, culture, and
background.

In 2017, I received a Bachelor of science Degree in Nursing from the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus. Presently, I'm pursuing MSc in advanced Nursing at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus with Education as my major. From here I am hoping to continue my profession in the nursing education field and I seek to improve my professional.

Background with Technology

During my short educational career, I have utilized various forms of technology to enhance learning. That would have included the use of projectors, laptops youTube videos and so on. For me, this idea was reinforced as I reviewed Richard Mayer’s theory of Multimedia Learning,” (David, 2015). In this Theory Mayer had showed how seeing a video and hearing the concept spoken at the same time can be similar to the same lesson being taught twice; thus, providing better retention among learners.

Visiting this theory and other resources I was able to better understand and plan for a teaching session. Often times, these technologies enhance participation among students and facilitate a more memorable learning experience.

Presently, I’m doing a course a titled: Instructional Application of Technology. Here I am hoping to build on what I have been using and utilize the available technology to making learning fun and easy.

  10. Hi Terrence.
You have been on quite an interesting (and I would say exciting) journey thus far! I liked that you referred to Mayer's research on multimedia in education. Mayer is one of the gurus in 21st century education and has done a lot of ground-breaking work in the filed of education and technology.

More so, I liked that you were able to implement what Mayer stated in your professional practice in preparing for your lessons etc. I hope this course will equip you not just with more technology tools but more so, orient you to the educational/pedagogical principles that inform the use of these technologies in teaching and learning.
